      <image:caption>When we experience mindfulness in the body we are honing our interoceptive awareness. This is non-judgmental awareness of what is happening in the body from moment to moment. The felt sense of the body can range from the experience of many physical sensations such as touch, pressure, heaviness or lightness, contraction, expansion, stretch, compression, tingling, and vibration. We also may experience physiological sensations in the body such as heart rate, breath rate, temperature, hunger, or fullness. Although this is happening autonomically in our bodies at all times, we can practice interoceptive awareness consciously. ` Interoceptive awareness is a foundation of mindfulness. The felt sense of the body is something that we can focus on to harness our attention to the present moment. We can explore sensations as they shift, change, arise, and fade away. When we notice we have become distracted, we can gently guide our attention back to the body and the body will always offer information. The opportunity for interoceptive awareness is always there no matter how distressed we may be and therefore is a way that we can bring ourselves back to the present moment and shift from a survival response to receptivity and reasoning.  Join me for this gentle body awareness meditation to hone your interoceptive awareness with a calm and compassionate mind.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Mindfulness practices are designed to help focus and calm the mind. However, if you are coming to your mediation practice with high levels of stress and anxiety, it is often challenging to just sit and usually results in a lot of thinking, worrying, and rumination. This often ends with feelings of “being bad at meditation,” or feelings of failure.  My experience as a yoga therapist has always informed my mindfulness facilitation. In yoga therapy we use practices that down-regulate your nervous system into a relaxation response by using the breath, movement, sound, mantra, reflection, and visualization to prepare you for your meditation practice. As Dr Shauna Shapiro says, “What you practice grows stronger.” This means that the more regularly you practice meditation with attainable goals, your brain is rewiring and creating new neural pathways for meditation to become more familiar and easier with time.</image:caption>
